Melissa sat in the backseat of the small Honda, staring out the window. Her mother was yelling at her for something, but Melissa didn't bother to listen. It was probably something about not closing the bathroom door all the way after Melissa had taken a shower. Melissa sighed and suddenly the ranch came into view and Melissa sat up. Her heart was beating faster and harder now. She always got excited when she saw Hurt, and today she was truly happy. Mom was in one of her "moods" and Melissa didn't want to get in her way.
In about 3 minutes, the car was stumbling over the rocky ground. Melissa clutched the car door handle and the other hand rested on the window. She could see people walking around and some people were riding there horses toward the pastures. Melissa had an automatic smile play on her lips, threatening to make her smile. As soon as her mother had slowed down, Melissa forced the door open and ran out, slamming the door. She didn't even bother to say goodbye and stop to look back. Melissa ran around the corners, dying to embrace Hurt with a hug. She pushed past a group of people and suddenly tears filled her eyes. They weren't tears of sadness or joy, but tears of anger and hatred. She heard her name called, but she felt that she needed to see Hurt.
No one really understood how Melissa felt about Hurt. To Melissa, Hurt wasn't a horse, but the only thing that listened to Melissa and saved a couple of times from suicide. Hurt was Melissa. Melissa finally stopped at Hurt's door and hunched over, trying to get her breath. She finally stood straight up and looked to see another horse.
"Uh?" Melissa said and looked at the name plate that was located on the stall door.
It read: "Thunder in Paradise"
Melissa shook her head and looked to the next stall. Hurt had her head poked out and the neck outstretched, trying to sniff Melissa. Melissa chuckled at her stupidity and moved to the next stall. Melissa wrapped her arms around the mare's neck. Melissa let go and Hurt threw her head up, and moved from the door. Melissa unlatched the door and walked in. Hurt turned and then Melissa hugged her again.
